The longest golf drive record

BBC published an interesting article last December 10th about Mike Austin, a golf player who has driven a ball 515 yards from the tee on a Las Vegas golf course in 1974, which is also registered as the world record. For the past 36 years this world record has not been surpassed considering the technology used today over the equipment innovation.

According to his website, he won one hundred and twenty eight (128) tournaments over a period of six decades, forty eight (48) long drive contests, and the 1978 U.S. National Open Senior Championship.

Probably one explanation for his world record achievement is a word called “ Kinesiology” or human kinetics (movement of the muscles and joints), which he refers as a way to find world-class golf instruction.

The science of kinesiology addresses the physiological, mechanical, and psychological mechanisms associated with human and animal movement. Applications of kinesiology in human health include the rehabilitation professions, such as physical and occupational therapy, as well as applications in the sport and exercise industries.

Although golf equipment manufactures are trying every year to eke out every inch of distance and studies about the human body have been helping players to achieve better performances, we are still questioning: when this old world record will be broken again?

The History of Golf

If you are reading this, the chances are that you are probably involved in the beautiful game, one way or another. But do you really know where it all started? Nobody is really certain when and where the game of golf originally started. According to some historians, traces of golf-like games using a bent stick as well leather balls stuffed with feathers, were played in Rome in the first century B.C. This theory however has little evidence surrounding it.

The most accepted and widely believed notion about the origins of golf game lead to Scotland, where, during the 12th century, shepherds use to knock stones into rabbit holes found in an area known as St. Andrews. This area is still known and maintained as the first golf site by Royal and Ancient Golf Club.
